"Love is Love" They Say

By Isha Y.

"Love is Love" They Say

“Love is Love”

But is what you say what you mean?

“Love is love”

But not all love should be publicly seen

“Love is love”

But not all love belongs on the movie screen

Yes, gay marriage has been legalized

But when gay actors kiss - the audience closes their eyes

We hide under a statement so easily said

But we refuse to internalize its message in our head

Some of us live in a “don’t ask, don’t tell” type of place

Where people can love who they want - in their own separate space

Others live in a world full of rainbow wristbands and gay fascination

Encouraging coming out - like you don’t already fit in?

“love is love” they say

But they don’t treat it that way

We think it’s what they want to hear - passionate and formal

Yet all anyone wants, is to feel like they’re normal

Love is a force we know we can’t tame

Yet we still try to mold it, categorize it - give it a name?

Love is the ocean that bridges our lands

It brings in the new tide but keeps holding our hand

The spirit of love is uncontrollable and wild

It has the same frolicking innocence of a curious child

Love is free it has no designs

Yet it's always expected to stay in the lines?

The lines drawn by artists who also draw checks and bills

As if love was a student and we had the skills

As if love did not exist for a thousand years before humankind

As if love was a body and we were its mind

But that image is only true in part

As we are not the mind - we are the heart

We are not the painter, we are the art

We are all victims of love’s uncontrollable beat

We must follow its dance - as society directs our feet

We must stop treating gay people like they have a disease

Like they deserve recognition or pitiful sympathies

If Love is love shouldn’t it consume us all?

But the more we resist it the greater we fall

Love is stronger than everything

Yet we try to beat it down with anything

The only way to win this battle - is to give love our defenses

Because “Love is Love” is more than just a sentence
